Sustainability at Chococam, Cameroon

Chococam is a subsidiary of Tiger Brands with operations in Douala, Cameroon. Chococam manufactures cocoa-based and confectionery products for sale in Cameroon and other central and west African markets. Chococam supports the Tiger Brands sustainability strategy through initiatives focused on health and nutrition, enhanced livelihoods and environmental stewardship. Food quality and safety is a critical priority, and the company's operations are ISO 9001 certified. Chococam also makes additional investments in response to the needs of local communities.

Chococam 2024 sustainability performance

  • Health and nutrition: Chococam uses its brands to educate mothers on children's nutritional needs and is planning to introduce fortified beverages in the coming years. The company provides financial and technical assistance to the Quality and Norms Agency to establish national food nutrition standards, promoting better public health and nutrition in Cameroon.
  • Enhanced livelihoods: Chococam improves access to potable water in the local community by providing a free daily water delivery system near its factory. The company supports the orphans of the police with school supplies and provides quarterly food hampers to four orphanages.
  • Environmental stewardship: Chococam recycles all paper waste into egg trays and has reduced packaging waste by 20,2% per tonne compared to the previous year. Carbon emissions were reduced by 16% per tonne, primarily due to lower fossil fuel consumption.
  • Food quality and safety: Chococam maintains its ISO 9001 certification and is preparing to upgrade its food safety management system to FSSC 22000. The company holds an annual quality week to raise awareness among employees and emphasise the importance of producing safe and high-quality products.
  • Health and safety: Chococam recorded zero lost-time injuries (LTIs) this year, reflecting the effectiveness of its preventive measures. After the tragic death of a temporary worker in July 2023, a root cause analysis was conducted, resulting in new bag-stacking processes and training materials for workers.
  • Corporate social investment (CSI): Chococam sponsors an annual street clean-up on World Clean-Up Day.
